Putting You On + DUVV

Interview held by Tiff

Introducing DUVV. Some of you may have heard of her, but for those who haven't, we're here to change that. DUVV's the soothing singer/songwriter you listen after a long day and you're just aching to relax or when you just want to hear some good music. I know because that's exactly the scene of events that transpired before I first listened to DUVV's latest EP, Through No Fault of Your Own, which is amazing by the way. But, before we get into this EP, get to know a little bit about her:

Name: DUVV

Age: 22

Location: New York

Creative Occupation: Singer/Songwriter

Your sound is so soft and therapeutic to vibe with, what goes through your mind when you’re recording?

Ah, it varies. I like to think of my songs as stories. So when I'm recording, I think about the message I'm conveying. I like to experiment with different sounds so I think about that too.

How do you prepare before you start to record? Are there any personal routines?

I write down lyrics a lot when I'm on the go. So sometimes before I record, I reference what I've written and try to craft something with that. Sometimes I just jump right in if I find a beat I really like. I just sing to it til something that feels right comes out. Once I have a sketch of an idea, I start recording drafts. It's not really a routine, but I love to record alone. I still feel a little weird recording in front of people at times.

I listened to your EP on Soundcloud (I really, really love it) which song was your favorite to record?

Thank you! I'm glad you love it. Hmm...I think "Mahogany Seams" was my favorite to record. I was crying when I played back certain parts after recording them cause it really captured a memory I kind of tucked away. I did some lowkey wailing on it too, so it was cool to hear how that came out.

Can you remember when you first ever performed? Do you feel the similarities between your first performance and now, or is it all totally different?

Oh yeah, my first performance was at an open mic in Philadelphia in 2014. I definitely feel different. I love singing live, and it's tight to see the growth since my first performance.

As you create and perform more music, who do you look forward to being able to work with?

Oh my goodness, there are a bunch people I'd love to work with. King Krule, Syd the Kyd, Felix Snow, Chance the Rapper, Mr. Carmack. Haha, etc.

Have you been given any words of wisdom that you carry with you?

"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will." (Romans 12:2 NIV)

What songs do you have in your rotation?

Oh! Chai Tulani - NdotoRICHIE SAPS - ElevenBen E. King - Stand By Me, & King Krule - Easy Easy (20syl Remix).
